How to avoid heartburn in pregnancy
The most common issue faced by almost every pregnant woman is the issue of heartburn. Heartburn is actually the name of burning sensation in the chest. Contrary to its name, it has nothing to do with heart problems, but related to burning sensation in the center of the chest.
Heartburn in pregnancy
The root cause of the heartburn is the expansion of the valve above the stomach, called as the gullet or throat or esophagus. Under normal (non pregnant) conditions, food is moved down through this valve into the stomach where stomach acid is present, which helps in food digestion, but in pregnancy conditions, a hormone, named as progesterone, expands this valve thus, allowing stomach acid and partially digested food to go up the throat causing burning sensation in the chest or heartburn.
Heartburn issue is a way too common during pregnancy. Heartburn is difficult to bear and it’s natural during pregnancy, however, by following below mentioned tips you can avoid its burning sensation.
Heartburn During Pregnancy
Don’t lie down flat on your back while sleeping; instead try to elevate your head using one or more pillows. It will help in moving down the food from esophagus to the stomach and will prevent it from moving up again to the throat. Thus, it will help in avoiding heartburn or any burning sensation issue.
Avoid intake of coffee and chocolate
Coffee and chocolate tend to lower esophageal sphincter pressure, thus, aiding the heartburn phenomena. They do not get digested easily and stay for a long time in the stomach, thereby causing burning sensation in the chest.
Smoking is typically injurious to health and if you are its addict and have not quit it yet, then it is the high time that you must put an end to it. It not only damages your lungs, but also heals up heartburn problem plus it’s poisonous for the baby too. It will endanger you and your baby’s life too, so; you must quit it before it gets too late.
Chewing gum after a meal:
Chew sugar free gum after a meal for about half an hour, it will help in producing more saliva, which will clear out the acid from the throat that might have relaxed from the stomach to the esophagus. Thus, it can help in preventing heartburn issue.
Avoid fatty foods
Try to avoid fatty and greasy foods as they stay in the stomach for a long time and are not digested easily thus healing up the heartburn phenomena. Spicy and citrus food on the other hand is also the triggering food that can trigger the burning sensation.
Avoid tight and fitted clothing
If you are facing the problem of severe heartburn during pregnancy then it is the time to watch out your clothing. Avoid tight and fitted clothing as it can fuel up the burning sensation in the chest. Loose and flowing dresses will allow you to breathe easily and will provide you comfort and peace.
Do little exercise
Go for yoga exercise in the morning, yoga basically works on the breathing system and improves your breathing. It will help in soothing burning sensation simultaneously making you feel fresh and active. Little physical exercises will not only keep you active, but it will also help you out during delivery. Since the body gets physically active so the delivery process becomes less painful.
Avoid large meals
Instead of consuming 3 big meals during the day, go for 5 to 6 small meals, large meals stay for longer time in the stomach thus, causes indigestion leading to heartburn problem. Take small meals and juices throughout the day. The small meals get digested easily and prevent burning sensation issue.
Avoid citrus fruits
Avoid consuming citrus fruits such as lemon and orange as citric acid can heal up the heartburn problem. Instead, you can take ginger tea and coconut milk, they have a natural tendency to neutralize stomach acid, thus it lowers the chances of burning sensation problem.
Avoid taking a nap after a meal
If you are facing heartburn issue, then you must avoid sleeping just after a meal because the food will not get digested and the expanded esophagus during pregnancy can cause stomach acid to move up the esophagus causing burning sensation in the chest. Always try to walk or sit for at least half an hour to aid your digestion before taking a nap.
