How to cure heartburn while pregnant
The pregnancy news is the most pleasing and exciting one for any woman, but it requires a huge commitment and patience. You need to be ready for various side effects of pregnancy, which can be unbearable too. The most common side effect of pregnancy is the heart burn. It is actually the burning sensation commonly known as indigestion as well.
Almost every pregnant woman complains about a heartburn problem. Heartburn does not involve any heart problem, but it produces a burning sensation around the center of the chest.
In normal conditions, when we swallow up the food, it gets down the stomach through a valve called esophagus, then it gets digested in the stomach due to presence of stomach acid. In case of pregnancy, a hormone, named as progesterone relaxes the esophagus or throat due to which stomach acid or sometimes partially digested food goes back up the throat, producing a burning sensation in the chest. This burning sensation in the chest is called heartburn, which causes much discomfort and burning feeling in the chest. In order to cure heartburn, you can try the following tips:
Go for small meals rather than large ones:
If you take three large meals a day, then there are 90% chances that you will face the problem of heartburn as the food will take more time to get digested and the relaxation of the esophagus valve might let the partially digested food back to the throat along with stomach acid. So, in order to avoid it, try to consume 5 or 6 small meals a day rather than big ones. The advantage is that the food gets digested in less time preventing heartburn sensation. Heartburn is caused only when your stomach is over stuffed so by taking small meals such that you do not feel full can help you in curing this burning sensation.
Chew slowly, enjoy your meal Always take small morsels rather than large ones and try to chew them slowly rather than gulping all at once. Just keep yourself relax and enjoy your meal. Keeps a gap of 1 to 2 minutes between morsels and try taking water or some liquid in between. It will help you in curing your burning sensation in chest. Do not go for over eating, just eat that much you feel partially full. You can take fruits and juices after wards, but avoid overeating.
Increase intake of water and juices Try to increase your water and other liquid intake. Do not go for citrus juices such as lemon and orange juice as they can heal up the heartburn sensation. Avoid taking coffee or soda drinks and if you want to consume them then always eat something before so that they may not cause heartburn. The best drink to soothe heartburn is fresh mint drink; it provides soothing and comfort to your chest area and prevents burning sensation. Tomato soup can also act as a cure to heartburn. You can eat tomatoes in a salad or make tomato soup; you will feel decrement in your heartburn pain.
No nap just after a meal Try to sit for half an hour or do walk for about 10 to 15 minutes after a meal, it will help in food digestion and will prevent partially digested food to move back up to the throat which can cause serious burning sensation in the center of the chest. Never take a nap just after a meal; it will heal up the heartburn phenomena during pregnancy. Always do some physical activity after taking a meal so that it eases your food digestion and preventing heartburn.
Go for salads and low spice food:
If you are facing heartburn problem during your pregnancy, then it is the time to watch out your food. You should limit the use of spicy food as it heals up the heartburn sensation. Try to go for salads and soups rather than high spiced foods. Avoid junk and fatty food as they stay in the stomach for a long time and take long time to get digested which may cause heartburn issue. Salads, soups and low spiced light meal will get digested in less time preventing any burning sensation.
Go for high enzyme fruits:
Fruits such as pineapples, coconut, papaya, avocados and bananas are rich in enzymes that help in fast digestion of food. These enzymes break down large food particles in the stomach into smaller ones, thus easing the digestion process.
Consume coconut water:
Coconut water has the natural tendency of neutralizing stomach acid, thus providing relief from heartburn and its burning sensation. You can take it on an almost daily basis, it has no side effect and it is healthy for the baby too.
Ginger tea in the morning:
Instead of regular tea, go for ginger tea in the morning, it helps in contracting the esophagus valve which gets expanded due to the hormone progesterone in pregnancy, ultimately providing relief from heartburn.
